Making Quick and Easy Christmas Costumes

from: Karlie Bestler

It seems that every year the time for preparations for Christmas festivities comes earlier and earlier. Preparations for school and church nativity plays will often begin before the end of October. Children get really excited no matter how small a part they have in a play. Parents put a lot of time and effort into getting their little ones ready for their partl.

Making Christmas costumes has become a part of many families' preparations for Christmas. At Christmas time people get invited to parties, and quite often these parties will involve fancy dress or costumes. There is not always enough time or money to go out and buy something to wear, and part of the party's fun is in making the Christmas costumes.

Making Christmas costumes does not have to be too arduous a task. Shepherd's costumes are probably the easiest. Spare sheets are very useful when it comes to making Christmas costumes. They can be utilized in a number of different ways. Sheets sewn side to side with holes cut out for the head and arms make quick costumes for that period.

Both men and women in biblical times often wore very loose garments that were tied or belted around the middle. Sheets are very good for a shepherd. You can make the loose garment which they tie round the middle with a piece of rope. Tea towels can make good headdresses, placed around the head with a band to hold them in place. An old walking stick or a large branch will serve as a shepherd's crook, and the costume is complete.

If you are making Christian Christmas costumes for the players like the Virgin Mary and Joseph, you can still use the same basic loose garment tied around the middle. Joseph can wear a headdress similar to the shepherds while Mary's costume just needs a large scarf or a small piece of sheeting for her headdress. If you are making Christian Christmas costumes for a wise man or king, they are also easy. Use the same basic costume and just add a a headress or crown.

When it comes to making Christian Christmas costumes for angels, it is probably best to find or buy a dress. Then you can make a simple halo from a headband, some foil and some pipecleaners. Wings can be constructed either from cardboard that is painted or from a wire frame that can be attached to the garment.

It can be relatively quick, easy and inexpensive to whip together some costumes. Be sure to save your old sheets.
